Xiaomi OLED Vision (55-inch) Ultra-HD Android TV review: An affordable OLED TV
When it comes to TV, generally only TVs with LED-LCD technology are common in the market because they are also affordable. When Xiaomi entered the TV segment, the company’s focus was only on LCD TVs. Even now Xiaomi’s LED TVs are being sold in large numbers in the market. But it has also tried its hand in the premium segment with models like Mi QLED TV 4K which is available in a massive 75-inch size for Rs 1,39,999. Taking this approach forward, the company has now introduced its first OLED TV in India.
Xiaomi OLED Vision TV Its price in India is Rs 89,999. It comes in a single size variant of 55 inches and is the company’s most expensive TV in this size in India. It is quite competitive and will be the first choice for those who want to enjoy OLED screen technology at a low price instead of spending money on expensive premium TVs. Xiaomi has launched this TV at such a price where you get to see high-end Quantum Dot LED TVs from brands like Sony, Samsung and OnePlus.
The TV has specifications like Dolby Vision IQ and Dolby Atmos. Is this Xiaomi TV with features like 30W sound output and Ultra-HD OLED screen the best TV under Rs 1 lakh? Let’s find out in this review.
Design and specifications of Xiaomi OLED Vision (55-inch) Ultra-HD Android TV
Most of the 55 inch OLED TVs come above Rs 1 lakh, but to compete in the price, Xiaomi has launched it for Rs 89,999. Currently, it can be called the most affordable OLED TV available in India. What makes this TV special is the availability of an OLED display at this price.
Apart from the price, the company has also not spared any money in the design and specifications of the TV. The thickness of the TV is only 4.6mm and it is quite slim at the edges. However, it is quite thick in the middle area towards its back panel. The bezels on the screen are very thin all around. Xiaomi’s logo, indicator light, power switch and switch for far-field microphone are on the module given at the bottom.
The TV can be wall mounted and stand mounted. Standard VESA compatible wall mounts can be used with it. Xiaomi provides free professional installation for this. The stand comes with the sales box of this TV but the wall mount kit is not available. However, a wall mount kit is available upon request at the time of installation.
After wall mounting, the ports and sockets of the TV are easily accessible. The RJ45 Ethernet port, Optical Audio-out (Toslink) port, RCA socket and Antenna socket face down while three HDMI 2.1 ports, two USB Type-A ports and a 3.5mm audio jack are on the left side of the screen. HDMI ARC is supported on one port. The power cable is permanently attached to the TV on the right side of the screen, which is too short for my liking.
Xiaomi OLED Vision TV has a 55-inch Ultra HD 3840×2160 pixel OLED display, each pixel of which has the ability to shine automatically and does not require backlighting. The TV supports high dynamic range content up to Dolby Vision IQ and HDR10+ format. It has a standard refresh rate of 60Hz and supports 98.5 percent DCI-P3 color gamut. Contrast ratio 15,00,000:1 and Reality Flow MEMC engine has been provided for motion interpolation.
For sound, this TV has a 30-watt speaker system, which has 8 drivers and supports Dolby Atmos and DTS:X formats. For connectivity, Wi-Fi 6 and dual band, Ethernet and wireless audio and Bluetooth 5 are supported to connect the TV remote to the TV. The TV has 3 GB RAM, 32 GB storage and has a quad core ARM Cortex-A73 processor.
Remote and features of Xiaomi OLED Vision (55-inch) Ultra-HD Android TV
Some things never change. Xiaomi’s TV remote is also one of them. The company’s basic, simple plastic Bluetooth remote comes with the box, which has seen a few minor changes. If we look at the price of the TV, the absence of a battery with the remote is disappointing.
The remote works well and some of the latest features have been added to it like Quick Mute (quick press of the volume button twice), Quick Wake (turns on the TV from standby in 3-4 seconds), Quick Settings (patch Long pressing the wall button). You can also switch between Xiaomi’s PatchWall user interface and stock Android TV.
It has hot keys for Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney + Hotstar. A button to activate Google Assistant and a microphone for voice commands are also provided on the TV. Apart from this, far-field microphones are also provided in the TV which have been set to always listen for wake commands.
The Assistant can be activated by saying ‘OK Google’ or ‘Hey Google’ from any corner of the room. It understands even complex commands easily. In this mode the microphones are always listening. If this is a matter of privacy for you, then the option to turn it off is also given.
The TV also has built-in Chromecast and low-latency features for gaming. Apart from this, there is no other special feature for gaming. The refresh rate is 60Hz which means it can be used with current generation gaming consoles.
Software and interface of Xiaomi OLED Vision (55-inch) Ultra-HD Android TV
Xiaomi OLED Vision TV runs on Android TV 11. It has PatchWall 4 on top and stock Android TV user interface. Apps and games can be installed through the Google Play store, which lists over 5,000 apps, including popular content streaming apps, social media apps, and other services.
PatchWall doesn’t add any major features, but it still has a content-focused UI and provides a good experience. It comes with IMDb integration and a Mi Home app to access your home’s IoT devices.
Compared to the last Xiaomi TV review I did, there are a few additions to this one. The interface now resembles the Google TV-like UI that arrived in late 2021. Although the lack of support for Netflix in the Richmond engine may disappoint you, for this you can use Google Assistant and regular search.
The overall software experience with the TV is quite good and I did not find any bugs etc. during use. Just as I personally like its app-focused approach, some users may also like its PatchWall content-friendly interface.
Performance of Xiaomi OLED Vision (55-inch) Ultra-HD Android TV
For a 55-inch TV, customers with a budget of around Rs 1 lakh will go for a good Quantum Dot LED TV like Sony’s Triluminos range, Samsung’s QLED TV and OnePlus TV Q1 Pro etc. However, Xiaomi’s TV offers better screen technology to its customers at a price of less than Rs 1 lakh.
This does not mean that Xiaomi’s TV stands up to premium OLED TVs like the LG CX range, but you definitely get the support of OLED technology in it. I watched content on the TV in a variety of resolutions and dynamic ranges, from Ultra-HD Dolby Vision to simple standard definition, and the TV performed as expected from it in this prime.
I watched Love, Death & Robots Season 3 on Netflix in Ultra-HD Dolby Vision. TV performed quite well. The blacks seen on TV were excellent. The contrast level was also perfect. Night time scenes also looked quite good on TV.
The effect of Dolby Vision was clearly visible, not only in brightness but also in colors. I saw the same while watching The World’s Most Amazing Vacation Rentals in which beautiful landscapes and holiday homes looked quite impressive.
Better Call Saul appeared sharp and detailed in Ultra HD resolution. In this also the black level and dark scenes looked quite good. Even in daylight scenes, the brightness level did not feel that strong, but the sharpness and color accuracy was much better. I noticed some motion interpolation issues in fast-paced scenes while watching Better Call Saul. At times it seemed distracting and came across as a major flaw of the TV.
FullHD and low-resolution content looked quite good on the TV. Where the sharpness was less in lower resolution, it was compensated by the natural soft sense of the TV. Colors and black levels were good in Matrix Resurrections, Kim’s Convenience and Formula 1 Race etc. Here too there was some problem with motion which was more visible in Formula 1 races.
The sound of Xiaomi OLED Vision TV will be considered fine at its place. The sound comes quite clear. This sounds the same across all types of content. But its real use is in sitcoms and sports content where dialogue and commentary need to be heard clearly. There is no growl in the sound and it delivers a clean, uniform sound even at high volumes.
The sound becomes more effective with the support of Dolby Atmos. Although the sound was good, according to the resolution of the TV, to get a better sound experience, Sony HT-A7000 or any equivalent sound bar can be used in it.
The cost of purchasing an OLED TV has made this category ultra premium. But Xiaomi’s competitive approach has made the TV more within reach. It gives a tough competition to Quantum Dot LED TVs of brands like Sony and Samsung. If you have a budget of Rs 1 lakh and want to buy a 55 inch TV, then this is one of my top choices.
Blacks look great on the Xiaomi OLED Vision TV. Its colors, sharpness, good software, reliable performance and value for money do full justice to it. However, there were some shortcomings in the motion areas but the overall experience was very good. It can be said that this TV is best for viewers who watch a lot of high resolution HDR content or are looking for a TV that is 4K and has very good black levels, that too without spending a lot of money.
